Dr. Adams is a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon who has the extensive expertise and training to effectively treat many types of skin cancer, preserve healthy skin, and ensure excellent cosmetic outcomes. As a part of his training, Dr. Adams completed a one-year long intensive fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Vic Marks and Dr. Mike Ramsey at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. Dr. Adams mastered the Mohs Surgical techniques, complex microscopic cancer interpretation, and advanced cosmetic reconstruction techniques. Dr. Adams participated in over 700 Mohs surgical cases in training and he has performed more than 14,000 Mohs procedures in private practice.

Dr. Adams is a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery, a distinction earned by fewer than 8% of all dermatologists in the United States.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month! Did you know 1 in 50 Americans will develop melanoma in their lifetime? If caught in the early stages, melanoma is entirely treatable, but it does spread quickly. Early detection and immediate treatment is vital to survival.

In an effort to encourage annual skin checks and melanoma awareness, the American Academy of Dermatology designates the first Monday of May as Melanoma Monday. Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology will be offering FREE SKIN CANCER SCREENINGS for the community on Monday, May 6th from 1:00-4:00pm. Stop by one of our four locations in in Miramar Beach/Destin, Niceville/Bluewater Bay, Fort Walton Beach, and Panama City Beach office locations to see one of our board-certified dermatologists.

“Wow! What an OUTSTANDING Doctor.”

Dr. Brittain Kulow is exceptional in her treatment of me. She has been treating both my wife and I for so long we can’t remember how we came to know of Dr. Kulow. She always greets us with a huge smile as if we are family that she just saw yesterday. She places you at ease while she checks you over and if God forbid she finds something to be removed she explains what she is going to do etc. Luckily not much of anything phases me. And her staff is incredible they go out of their way to ensure you are comfortable. They get back to you quickly with the results of your biopsy depending on how “YOU” determined how you wanted to receive results / information. My Technician on my recent visit was fantastic, she was professional, courteous, kind, yet friendly and laughed at my silly jokes to stay calm. What I haven’t told you is I’m a recent USAF veteran rated 100% disabled, I’ve just had my 21st major surgery to try and repair my back for the 5th time, I’ve been told I would not walk three times, and yet I still prove them wrong, I have a growth on my brain that causes memory loss etc. the list goes on. Annual Check-Ups are Preventive Maintenance

Early and proactive detection is key in defending against many different types of skin conditions and can even be the difference between life and death. Detection should be treated with the same level of importance as protection. You should do a thorough self-exam once a month and see a Board-Certified Dermatologist for a skin screening examination at least once a year, especially if you have a history of significant sun exposure or a family history of skin cancer. Pay attention to any changes in freckles, moles, or blemishes, and let your doctor know if anything looks suspicious.

Each year skin cancers make up over half of all new cancers in the United States, and there are more skin cancer cases diagnosed than all other types of cancers combined. While there are different types of serious skin cancers, melanoma is the most extreme. Melanoma grows aggressively and can metastasize, meaning it can even spread to other parts of the body. In 2019, over 192,000 Americans are expected to be diagnosed with Melanoma and this cancer is expected to take the lives of 7,230 individuals.

Each year, there are more than three million cases of skin cancer, with basal cell carcinoma accounting for 80 percent of all skin cancer cases. The next most frequent form is squamous cell carcinoma, representing about 16 percent of the total. Malignant melanoma makes up the remaining 4 percent. Each of these types of skin cancer is unique, and none of them transform into another type. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma are not typically life-threatening, and with early detection, can be successfully treated.
