What is Intense Pulsed Light?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation uses multiple wavelengths of light to treat undesired skin conditions such as brown pigmentation, age spots (or freckles), prominent facial capillaries, redness, acne, rosacea, and unwanted facial and body hair. Unlike a laser, intense pulsed light treatment uses a spectrum of wavelengths to treat targeted areas.

How the Process Works

First the face will be thoroughly cleansed, followed by protective eyewear being placed on the patient. The tip of the IPL is actively cooled and feels refreshingly cool on the skin. When pulses of light are applied to the skin, patients will feel a slight stinging sensation, similar to snapping small rubber bands against the skin. Depending on the condition and area of concern, the physician will recommend how many treatments you will need.

Most patients experience a few days of redness and possible pinpoint bruising after the IPL procedure. Treated brown spots may appear darker for a few days, then peel away. When treatment is complete the result is uniform-looking, even skin tone that almost immediately appears healthier. This effect can be long-lasting, depending on age and skin type. There is no down time associated with IPL treatment; makeup can be applied immediately after treatment, if necessary.

The Most Common Treatment Areas

The face is the most popular treatment area. When IPL is performed on the face it is called a photofacial. The entire face can be treated safely and quickly with IPL to remove unwanted sun spots, freckles and superficial blood vessels that are frequently consequences of our active lifestyles in the sun.

Used for Permanent Hair Reduction

For permanent hair reduction, IPL treatment is both gentle and effective. Using the same flashes of varied light wavelengths, hair follicles in problem areas are destroyed so they no longer produce hair. Compared to laser treatments that target unwanted hair, intense pulsed light therapy for hair removal is gentle and accomplishes the same task, often in fewer visits.
