May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month! Did you know 1 in 50 Americans will develop melanoma in their lifetime? If caught in the early stages, melanoma is entirely treatable, but it does spread quickly. Early detection and immediate treatment is vital to survival.

In an effort to encourage annual skin checks and melanoma awareness, the American Academy of Dermatology designates the first Monday of May as Melanoma Monday. Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology will be offering FREE SKIN CANCER SCREENINGS for the community on Monday, May 6th from 1:00-4:00pm. Stop by one of our four locations in in Miramar Beach/Destin, Niceville/Bluewater Bay, Fort Walton Beach, and Panama City Beach office locations to see one of our board-certified dermatologists.

Did you know…

1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
• Melanoma is the second most common form of cancer in females ages 15-29.
• Approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day.
• Having 5 or more blistering sunburns early in life increases your melanoma risk by 80%.

During Skin cancer Awareness Month, the American Academy of Dermatology is recognizing Skin Cancer Heroes – patients and survivors, the friends and loved ones who have helped support them, and the board-certified dermatologists who have detected and treated their skin cancer. The AAD encourages you to be your own Skin Cancer Hero by taking steps to prevent skin cancer and detect it early, when it’s most treatable.

Best of the Emerald Coast 2017

Every year, Emerald Coast Magazine brings the Best of the Emerald Coast to their readers. Over the Summer, votes are collected in over 200 categories to name area businesses the best of the best in their field of expertise.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and in an effort to bring awareness to the local community, Coastal Skin Surgery and Dermatology is offering Free Cancer Screenings on Monday, May 1st, 2017.

Stop by one of our 4 office location for your free skin check by one of our board-certified dermatologists Monday, May 1st, from 1:00-4:00pm. Free Skin Checks will be provided by Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology physicians in Miramar Beach/Destin, Niceville/Bluewater Bay, Fort Walton Beach, and Panama City Beach office locations.

A Few Things You Don’t Know About Melanoma

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults ages 25 to 29 and the second most common cancer for people aged 15-29.
Melanoma can appear in areas that are relatively unexposed to the sun like your fingers and toes and underarms.
While basal and squamous cell carcinomas are more common than melanoma, they have higher survival rates. According to the AAD, one American dies from melanoma every hour.
The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to lymph nodes is 98 percent, according to the AAD.
