Skin Protection Tips | Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidences of breast, prostate lung and colon cancers. Melanoma accounts for less than one percent of skin cancer cases, but is responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths. Cumulative sun exposure and sunburns at an early age greatly increase your chance of developing skin cancer later in life. Prevent skin cancer by protecting your skin now!
- Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen! Wear sunscreen every day, in all weather and through every season. This is the best way to protect your skin on a daily basis. If you are spending the day in the sun, be sure to reapply sunscreen at least every 80 minutes.
Tip: Apply sunscreen when you are getting dressed. SPF needs a good 20 minutes to sink into your skin before it can protect you from UV rays.
- Do not rely on make-up to be the only SPF you use on your face.
- Check the expiration date on your sunscreen. The active ingredients can lose their effectiveness so make sure to pick up a new bottle at the beginning of each summer season.
- Choose a pair of sunglasses with total UV protection.
- A wide-brimmed hat will protect your face and scalp from the sun’s hot rays.
Tip: Mist your scalp and hairline with spray sunscreen to avoid a sunburn on your scalp.
- Try to avoid being in the sun during the hottest part of the day—10:00am- 2:00pm.
Sunburns are painful and uncomfortable. Don’t risk it! Make sure your skin is fully protected before you enjoy a day of fun in the sun!
