What is Kybella?
Kybella is a not-surgical technique used to reduce excess fat beneath the chin. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administation (FDA), this procedure uses deoxycholic acid injections to target this area.
A 2015 consumer survey, conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), found that 67 percent of individuals are self-conscious about their double chin. While unhappy with their chin area, most patients do not want to undergo surgical procedures such as liposuction. Kybella provides a safe and effective alternative with minimal downtime and pre-procedure preparation.
You body naturally produces deoxycholic acid, a bile acid, to help absorb fat. Kybella uses a synthetic form of this acid as an injection to destroy fat cells beneath the chin area. Once the fat cells are destroyed, that area can no longer store fat. The number of sessions varies per person. Multiple treatments are recommended for the best results.
The procedure usually takes less than an hour. The provider typically uses a topical numbing agent and marks the injection sites with a marker. Between 20-50 injections are administered under the chin. The acid works over the following week—killing fat cells that are then metabolized by the body. The side effects are usually very minimal with the most common being swelling in the chin area.
