Q. What should I look for in monitoring for skin cancers and moles?

A. I encourage patient to monitor their skin for any lesions or moles that appear to be changing or bleeding. Monitor for any sores that are not healing or staying rough and scaly, pink or red/inflamed. When it comes to changing moles you want to monitor for the ABCDE’s- (Asymmetrical- one half not like the other, Borders jagged or irregular, Color- changing, dark, multicolored/irregular, Diameter greater than 6 mm but can be smaller, Evolving or changing). If any lesions fit the above criteria I encourage patient to make an appointment and have the lesion(s) checked.

Q. What sunscreen would you recommend?

A. I recommend sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, and I recommend patients try to use a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide or Avobenzone as a main ingredient. Another great addition that I recommend would be for patients to wear SPF rated protective clothing.

Q. What does PA-C stand for?

A. PA-C stands for Physician Assistant Certified, which means that the physician assistant is currently nationally certified and has maintained their certification through passing mandated Certification Boards after completing and graduating from an accredited PA program. A Physician Assistant is a nationally certified and state licensed medical professional trained to practice medicine on healthcare teams with physicians and other providers. PA’s can prescribe medications and perform medical procedures in all 50 states, District of Columbia, a majority of the US territories, and the uniformed services.
